The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has launched a new ‘Online Gate Pass’ system aimed at improving the efficiency of port operations. The initiative was officially inaugurated by CPA Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman during a ceremony held at Gate No 4 of the port on Tuesday.
Previously, vehicles arriving at the port for cargo delivery were required to obtain gate passes manually, which took approximately 15-20 minutes. This process often resulted in long queues and traffic congestion in the surrounding areas. The introduction of the online gate pass system is intended to alleviate these issues by allowing transport workers to obtain gate passes online prior to their arrival at the port.
Rear Admiral Moniruzzaman emphasised the significance of the digital gate pass system, stating, “This modern system will significantly accelerate port operations.” He further noted that it would enhance the monitoring of vehicles entering the port, thereby increasing the efficiency of the port’s transport department.
The CPA expects that the new system will not only enhance port efficiency but also reduce vessel turnaround times and expedite cargo handling processes.
