
With the upcoming BGMEA election drawing near, members of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) are expressing their desire for a leadership characterised by dynamism, skill, and youthfulness, which is seen as crucial for effectively addressing both current and forthcoming challenges within the apparel industry.
Media reports maintained this adding the BGMEA members are advocating for a transparent and impartial electoral process that will usher in a new leadership capable of navigating various industry hurdles, including issues such as global competitiveness, the integration of automation, soaring operational expenses, reductions in export incentives, and the necessity of fair pricing negotiations with buyers.
The upcoming election for the BGMEA board covering the term from 2024 to 2026 will feature a total of 70 candidates from two competing panels: Sammilito Parishad and the Forum.
Each panel will field 35 candidates, with 26 from Dhaka and nine from the Chittagong zone vying for positions.
The BGMEA has finalised a voter list comprising 2,496 members, with 2,032 located in Dhaka and 464 in the Chittagong zone.
This list underwent scrutiny after allegations surfaced regarding the eligibility of certain voters.
Specifically, 67 factory owners were removed from the list by the Election Appeal Board due to lacking a factory or Tax Identification Number (TIN).
