The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has called for the expansion of the Chittagong Port’s capacity to meet the increasing demands of the export-import sector in Bangladesh, particularly the export-oriented readymade garment (RMG) industry.
The trade association also emphasized the need to enhance the port’s efficiency in handling export-import cargoes quickly, thereby reducing lead times.
BGMEA President Faruque Hassan made this plea during a meeting with Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail, the Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) recently even as he stressed the pivotal role of the port in accelerating trade and highlighted that the RMG industry in Bangladesh has set an ambitious target of achieving US $ 100 billion in garment exports by 2030.
Meeting this target necessitates expanding the port’s capacity to handle export-import goods efficiently.
The industry also aims to diversify into the high-end fashion segment to increase its share in the global market, which requires shorter lead times and in the competitive business landscape, reducing lead times is essential to stay ahead in market competition, noted Faruque Hassan.
He expressed gratitude to the CPA for the steps taken to ensure the smooth functioning of the Port and urged them to continue their efforts to accelerate export-import activities.
