Over 34,900 tonnes of apparel products worth US $ 462.34 million of Bangladesh’s garments have been transshipped through India to 36 countries in the past 15 months. This period, spanning from January 2024 to March 2025, saw a diverse range of clothing items, including blouses, trousers, T-shirts, and baby garments, being exported.
Key markets for these shipments included the United States, various European Union countries such as Germany and France, and Asian nations like Japan and South Korea. The total export value is reported to be Taka 5,640.5 crore (US $ 474 million), as per trade data from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
Notably, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and Canada emerged as leading non-EU importers, with South Africa and Chile also playing significant roles in Bangladesh’s garment export landscape. Industry analysts credit the robust export volume to Bangladesh’s competitive manufacturing costs and India’s well-established transshipment infrastructure.
However, the export route faced a sudden disruption when India abruptly cancelled the transshipment arrangements for Bangladesh on 8th April, affecting many local exporters. Despite this setback, Bangladesh’s garment sector had previously recorded exports totaling approximately US $ 36 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year.
