In the month of January 2018, Bangladesh exported denim apparels worth US $ 37.63 million to the US. The figure is somewhat modest as the second-largest denim supplier to the world, after China, grew 6.54 per cent on the yearly note.
After analysing the data released by OTEXA, Apparel Resources came to a conclusion that denim trousers of Men and Boys (MB) are the largest contributor to Bangladesh’s overall denim exports to the US. Denim trousers exports in the month valued at US $ 20.019 million (up 11.37 per cent), beating China’s exports value in the same category, which stood at US $ 18.73 million.
Bangladesh, however, remained behind Mexico which clocked US $ 47.10 million value from the exports of denim trousers (MB) to the US.
On the other hand, exports of denim trousers of Women and Girls (WG) from Bangladesh were worth US $ 17.61 million, up by 8.60 per cent from January 2016.
Further, denim jackets also helped the country’s exports grow in the reporting month. Against US $ 0.57 million value in January 2017, Bangladesh grew by 81.40 per cent to earn US $ 1.036 million in January 2018.
However, denim skirts remain a negative category for Bangladesh. On the Y-o-Y basis, denim skirts business fell 31.55 per cent in January 2018 as shipments to the US valued at just US $ 0.387 million against the shipment value of US $ 0.566 million in the corresponding month last year.
Simply put, a shift of denim orders from China can largely be seen in the latest available data. Therefore, to cope with the increasing demand and to keep the positive momentum in its own favour, Bangladesh’s denim industry is poised to go for expansion, keep their unit prices low and provide buyers with unmatchable quality.
