
With an aim to boost silk industry in the state, the Assam (India) Government has decided to create a wildlife sanctuary and plant trees to produce eri and muga cocoons. The Government is planning to plant 25 lakh trees for the same. This was revealed by the Assam Handloom and Sericulture Minister Ranjit Dutta recently.
A slew of measures like setting up of Assam Silk Outreach Mission and Yarns Banks have also been taken by the State Government for the benefit of the sector. The Assam Silk Outreach Mission plays a vital role in promoting various silk products from the region. Yarn Banks have also become operational in nine districts while others districts will get it soon.

“Eri, Muga and silk entrepreneurs will be supported by the Government and a handloom park will be set up in Nagaon district which will benefit twenty thousand people,” the Minster said. Additionally, a brand ambassador is likely to be appointed soon who will promote Muga and other silk products.
