Bangladesh’s premier seaport, Chittagong Port, might have to deal with container pile-up during the Eid holidays as importers might delay receiving consignments from the port in view of most of the industries remaining shut during this religious festival.
As the port continues to operate during this period to keep the supply chain functional, there are apprehensions of the port’s activities getting disrupted owing to the same, reports claimed, citing the concerned officials in this regard.
Reports further citing the port authorities, claimed as of 19th April, the number of containers in the port yards reached almost 35,896 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), which was some 25,000 TEUs a month ago and went on to add if the container pile-up increases further during the five-day Eid vacation, it will only make things difficult for the port authorities, in order to prevent which, the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) on 30th March wrote to the trade bodies and concerned stakeholders including C&F agents and the BGMEA, calling upon them to ensure the release of goods at the earliest from their end.
