Chattogram Port has received a clean assessment from the United States Coast Guard following an official inspection of its security framework, marking a significant milestone in the port’s compliance with international maritime security standards.
According to a press release issued by the Chittagong Port Authority on Monday night, the port was found to be fully compliant with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, with the inspection report recording “zero observations”.
The assessment was carried out by the US Coast Guard’s International Port Security (IPS) team, which conducted a two-day formal inspection at the port on 21st and 22nd January. The inspection formed part of a routine international evaluation process undertaken at ports worldwide to assess the implementation of the ISPS Code.
Commenting on the findings, Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Mohammad Omar Faruk said the IPS team’s official report, which was received recently, raised no concerns or deficiencies, describing the outcome as a major achievement in the port’s history. He added that the delegation conducted a comprehensive review of the port’s security arrangements, including the effectiveness of ISPS Code implementation, the efficiency of security management systems, and the adequacy of supporting infrastructure.
Faruk said the inspection team’s summary had positively highlighted the port’s security measures, the professionalism of its workforce, the use of modern technology and its adherence to international security standards. He added that the zero-observation outcome further strengthened international recognition of the port’s security capabilities and operational standards.
The ISPS Code, developed by the International Maritime Organization, is a global maritime security framework aimed at preventing terrorism, unlawful access, smuggling and other security threats to ships and port facilities. Compliance with the code is considered critical to ensuring the safety of maritime trade and maintaining confidence in global supply chains.
As one of the country’s primary gateways for international trade, Chattogram Port’s successful implementation of the ISPS Code is seen as vital to safeguarding port operations, enhancing global credibility and supporting the smooth flow of international commerce.
