Urmi Group
Urmi Group, a well-known brand in Bangladesh’s textile and clothing sector, has demonstrated its dedication to sustainable production by actively taking part in the Bangladesh Alliance for Water Reuse and Recycle’s (A4R) founding workshop. The creation of a white paper on water reuse and recycling in Bangladesh was the main goal of the workshop, which was hosted by the Water Resources Planning Organization (WARPO). Director Shamarukh Fakhruddin represented Urmi Group.
During the discussion, Fakhruddin identified four ‘strategic enablers’ to increase water reuse in Bangladesh’s textile and readymade garment (RMG) industries:
Establishing a Water Credit system for recycling wastewater, encouraging government-buyer cooperation to create viable business cases, providing tax breaks to businesses that promote water conservation and collaborating on implementation with the Department of Environment (DoE)
Urmi Group’s active participation in A4R is supported by its recent formal membership of the alliance, a national platform for public-private collaboration launched in May 2025 to scale up water reuse practices in the textile industry.
These initiatives are timely, according to industry observers. A4R and its related pilot projects, like wastewater-management facilities established in partnership with international brands, aim to solve Bangladesh’s textile industry’s substantial wastewater generation and groundwater removal.
The involvement and suggested strategic skills, according to a statement from Urmi Group, demonstrate the company’s “commitment to driving innovation in water management and promoting circular, resource-efficient growth across its operations.”
In addition to addressing environmental compliance and corporate social responsibility, the company pointed out that increasing water reuse boosts competitiveness in export markets, where buyers from around the world are calling for more sustainable practices.
It is anticipated that the white paper in production would provide finance mechanisms, industry-wide operational frameworks and policy suggestions for wastewater reuse. With the involvement of important players in the textile, clothing and dyeing sectors, this project may mark a turning point in Bangladesh’s shift to eco-friendly production.
