The UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT) serves as a unifying body for designers, manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers within the UK fashion and textile industry, aiming to bolster their enterprises. An active member of UKFT, the Her Majesty’s Prison and Probations Service (HMPPS) collaborates closely with the association to craft specialised Production Sewing Machinist Training programs. These programs cater to Production Instructors overseeing prison workshops on-site and prisoners engaged in textile workshop activities.
With a current presence in 50 UK prisons through 73 textile workshops, the joint initiative by UKFT and HMPPS seeks to streamline sewing machinist training standards across these facilities. By aligning with industry best practices, the program not only enhances internal production processes but also mirrors prevalent norms within the fashion and textile manufacturing sector.
In February 2024, UKFT conducted the Production Sewing Machinist Instructor Training at three UK prisons—HMP Lindholme, HMP Moorland, and HMP Ranby. This training phase represents an important stage in the program, empowering instructors to advocate for career opportunities in fashion and textile manufacturing among prisoners. Moreover, it equips them to implement UKFT’s Production Sewing Machinist Programme within their respective workshops.
The overarching goal of the program is to illuminate career pathways within the UK fashion and textile manufacturing industry for participating prisoners, positioning the sector as a viable option for ex-offenders seeking reintegration opportunities. Operating autonomously, the prison textile workshops engage over 2,200 prisoners under the guidance of 150 instructors, producing a diverse array of garments and textile goods for internal consumption, totaling two million products annually. These workshops oversee end-to-end manufacturing processes—from cutting and sewing to quality control and packaging—ensuring adherence to quality standards such as IOS9001 accreditation in select workshops.
