Sustainable Couture fashion house Aelis is working on upcycling tutus into bespoke dresses and new costumes with Paris Opera for its fashion week show.
Aelis founder Sofia Crociani explained that the inspiration behind the collection of upcycled tutus from opera costumes is based on dandelion seeds, which reminded the designer of ballet tutus.
The tutu collection was shown together with the Italian designer’s creative line in organic silk mousseline and tulle, along with silk dresses and satin jackets.
The collection will be presented as costumes at the Paris Opera for a special heritage day show which will be held in September.
Crociani said, “It’s the first stage of a new project. The Opera is very engaged with upcycling. Something that was going to be thrown away, we can do something beautiful, and I think this sends an important message.”
She continued saying “Sustainability comes from approaching each piece like a treasure. If you do that, you understand it can’t just be thrown away, and if you don’t want it anymore, you must give it to someone else who will appreciate it.”
