The rate of expenditure of apparel workers in Bangladesh, in the recent months, has gone much higher than their income.
This has been underlined in a new study, reportedly, carried out by the Centre for Policy Dialogue and Christian Aid in Bangladesh.
The study has shown that the monthly family income of apparel workers in March increased by about 1.7 per cent to Taka 26,341 from that of Taka 25,913 in December 2021, and at the same time, their family expenditure increased by about 9.5 per cent to Taka 20,721 from Taka 18,927.
The finding of the study was presented recently by CPD Research Director Khondaker Golam Moazzem.
The study, reportedly, further found that workers’ per day average working time increased to 10.46 hours from 10.31 during the pre-COVID period, while the average break time of the workers came down to 1.08 hours a day from 1.12 per day during the pre-COVID period even as it underlined wages of apparel workers in March 2022 increased by 12.5 per cent over the same month in 2021 as their working hours and working days had increased to meet the commitment of timely shipment of export orders during the period while maintaining that September 2021 to March 2022 has been high export growth period for the readymade garment sector and that workers were overburdened with work during the period.
