In the year 2025, which also happens to be the closing year of 8FYP or eighth Five Year Plan, around 10 lakh jobs in the RMG sector would be taken over by technologies, keeping in consideration which, the draft 8th Plan has recommended the Government to take measures to create jobs in other potential sectors, claimed media reports.
Participating at a virtual consultation meeting on the sector-based chapters of the 8th Plan on 4 November (Wednesday), member of the General Economics Division of the Planning Commission Dr. Shamsul Alam reportedly said to tackle the challenges of automation, Government’s focus would be on technology-based education that would render the youth competent enough to survive in the emerging job market while adding that service sectors and SMEs will be prioritised as alternate employment sources for those who lose employment opportunities.
The draft 8FYP thus while stressing on vocational and other training options emphasised on skill-development policy directed towards women as compared to men, women are said to be more likely to be retrenched due to automation.
It may be mentioned here that as per an analysis by the Access to Information (a2i) programme of the Government and the ILO, by 2041, jobs of around 27 lakh garment workers in Bangladesh will be replaced by robots because of the automation.
