Canadian textile sustainability app SIXR has partnered with George Brown College’s FOR TOMORROW brand to develop a solution for the end-of-life phase of garments. Students and members of George Brown College’s Brookfield Sustainability Institute have designed a hoodie under the ‘FOR TOMORROW’ label, marking it as the first brand listed on the SIXR app. Through QR codes, the app provides users with detailed information about each garment, including its material composition, manufacturing details, care instructions, and options for returning it for reuse or recycling.
Gagan Singh, CEO of SIXR, was brought on board by George Brown College to oversee Fashion Exchange Toronto, the institution’s hub for fashion innovators. He also taught sustainable fashion at the college, which deepened his understanding of the subject. As the CEO of SIXR, a company he co-founded over a year ago, Singh has developed a circular economy app to address the end-of-life challenges of garments listed on the app. He aspires for SIXR to become the “Amazon of sustainability” by encouraging sustainable clothing purchasing habits.
The FOR TOMORROW hoodies, aside from being the first items on the SIXR app, boast other sustainable features. Constructed from 70 per cent recycled cotton and 30 per cent recycled polyester, they are purposefully designed to be part of the circular economy. A Kickstarter campaign was initiated to promote SIXR and FOR TOMORROW, aiming to raise awareness and foster collaborations. The campaign quickly surpassed its initial US $ 5,000 target (a deliberately low goal set by Singh), and he is now striving to reach US $ 25,000 to announce the next milestone.
