Even as Bangladesh remembered solemnly those who perished in the infamous Rana Plaza disaster on its 10th anniversary recently, a platform of global institutional investors has called upon the concerned stakeholders (global brands and buyers) towards prioritising workers’ safety in the apparel supply chain.
Reports underlined while adding ICCR or the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, which is a coalition of 192 global institutional investors, called on the brands/buyers sourcing from Bangladesh to strengthen their implementation of human rights due diligence to effectively embed their corporate responsibility so as to respect the human rights even as it called upon the concerned entities to join the International Accord in Bangladesh so as to accelerate the implementation of human rights due diligence in the garment sector as defined by the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
It may be mentioned here that the eight-storey Rana Plaza, which housed apparel manufacturing units, collapsed on 24th April 2013, killing 1,138 people mostly garment workers besides injuring another 2,500.
