Smarting under the recent High Court order which asked tanners still operating out of Hazaribagh (Bangladesh) to pay BDT 50,000 per day as compensation for environmental pollution caused by them, the tannery owners were for some welcome relief after Chamber Judge Court of the Appellate Division reportedly stayed the High Court order till July 17.
The Court of Chamber Judge Hasan Fayez Siddique reportedly passed this order on an appeal filed by tannery owners, who were represented by Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapash and Barrister Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury. On June 27, Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) and Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association (BFLLFEA) appealed seeking the stay of the High Court order.

The High Court order, it may be mentioned here, came in the backdrop of submission of list of tanneries still operating in Hazaribagh submitted by the Industries Secretary which reportedly underlined that of the 155 units in the region, only the Unit-2 of Reliance Tannery has moved to Savar while the remaining 144 have started the shifting process. Taking cognisance of a petition of rights and environmentalist organisation Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, the HC on April 12 asked for submission of the list.
