Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act, which would mandate fashion industry supplying to the US’s New York to disclose if the products sourced by them are from areas with reported forced or child labour, or ‘sweatshop’ working conditions — major destination of global fashions,New York, has recently introduced a bill that aims to make apparel retailers and manufacturers disclose detailed information on environmental and social practices — could push up garment export cost from Bangladesh.
Media reports maintained this citing the industry people, according to whom it will not be difficult to comply with the bill even if cost of doing business would go up.
Meanwhile speaking to the media, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, reportedly, maintained that once the bill is passed, it will be clear what kind of impact it would have on Bangladesh’s exports.
“…if there are no major impacts, the cost will go up,” further, reportedly, claimed the BGMEA chair.
For information, at the starting of the year, New York legislator proposed this bill, which aims at amending the general business law that would require fashion retailers and apparel manufacturers to disclose environmental and social due diligence and policies.
