The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is looking for Geographical Indication (GI) registration of Nyishi handlooms produced in Arunachal Pradesh.
Nyishi handlooms is a traditional handloom practices of Nyishi tribe in Arunachal Pradesh.
GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place.
NABARD has applied application for the same. The GI registration will give a unique identity to the Nyishi handloom products of the state which are being produced by different self-help groups (SGH).
NABARD also supported a rural mart which is sanctioned to the Pei Ann Nyame SGH. NABARD will provide grant assistance to cover the initial operating costs for the mart like rent and salary of salespersons besides the cost of promotion and basic capital costs.
This will help the SHG members who may be risk averse and lack financial capability to have a marketing outlet for their products.
