The Union Ministry of Textiles, in partnership with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), has launched an innovative pilot project to recycle unwanted clothing.
The Consumer Textile Recycling Pilot Project was introduced by Commissioner of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Kailas Shinde.
Navi Mumbai is a great place for this initiative because of its continuous cleanliness efforts and proactive approach to creative cleaning activities, according to Tapan Kumar Raut, Director of the Union Ministry of Textiles.
In order to organise clothing collecting at the societal level, the Central Clothing Committee, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, and several NGOs would be involved in this project.
Waste in Navi Mumbai is divided into three categories: household hazardous, dry, and wet. This pilot initiative will recycle and classify used clothing differently. In order to highlight the potential for recycling and reuse of used clothing, a survey is being undertaken.
Citizens can donate unused stuff, including clothes, for others to utilise at 94 ‘3 R’ centres operated by the NMMC. Future implementation also includes plans for a new recycling hall. To guarantee the project’s success, Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar asked society office bearers for their complete support.
