Like in other parts of the world, International Workers’ Day, better known as May Day, was observed across Bangladesh on 1st May (Monday) even as different labour rights groups organised rallies, held discussions and brought out rallies in the capital Dhaka and elsewhere across the country, to mark the day.
The Garment Workers’ Trade Union Centre reportedly held a rally at Purana Paltan crossing even as party president Mantu Ghosh chaired the programme.
Meanwhile, labour leaders reportedly demanded the Government should set Taka 20,000 as the minimum monthly workers’ wage in view of soaring prices of essentials even as they opined workers were finding it a hard time to run their families in the current scenario.
The labour leaders also reportedly called upon the Government not to cut jobs of any worker even as they demanded an end to the oppression of workers while also calling for providing housing facilities, pension and health insurance to the workers as prescribed by the law.
