In an effort to recycle items that might otherwise end up in landfills, Australian recycling company Samsara Eco has secured US $ 65 million to finance the development of an enzyme that eats plastic.
Samsara Eco creates plastic-eating enzymes using artificial intelligence (AI). These enzymes can break down common plastics into their constituent parts, allowing for reuse and what the company refers to as “infinite recycling.”
The Australian business asserts that their technology has a significant competitive edge over rivals because it can extract different materials from plastic waste through a series of phases without the need for plastics to be sorted for recycling.
The company intends to construct commercial facilities for innovation throughout Southeast Asia with the US $ 65 million it has raised. It claims to be able to recycle “millions of tonnes” of plastic waste from surrounding garment companies through one nylon factory and one polyester facility. The locations will be 50:50 joint partnerships between plastic polymerization businesses and Samsara Eco.
