IKEA, the Swedish multinational conglomerate renowned for its home textiles and accessories, has taken a stride in its dedication to sustainability with the introduction of the VÄXELBRUK collection. This assortment is a testament to IKEA’s commitment to recycling, being crafted from 300 tonnes of retired coworker uniforms and recycled polyester derived from PET bottles.
Noteworthy is the collection’s sustainable approach to colour alteration, sidestepping resource-intensive dyeing processes. Instead, IKEA repurposed the original bright yellow and blue hues of the uniforms by incorporating various fabric colours sourced from industrial offcuts.
The genesis of the VÄXELBRUK collection dates back to the introduction of new staff uniforms across Europe in 2020, prompting IKEA to address potential waste concerns. Over two years, the company gathered discarded garments, transforming them into 16 diverse textile products. This range includes curtains, throws, cushion covers, and bags, each designed to harmonise aesthetics with sustainability.
Scheduled for availability in European stores in February 2024, the VÄXELBRUK products underscore IKEA’s commitment to environmental responsibility. This initiative marks a milestone in IKEA’s sustainability journey, steering away from traditional practices and actively contributing to the advancement of new recycling methods.
