Bangladesh has the wherewithal to generate 1,700 MW-3,400 MW of electricity from renewable energy sources immediately.
This is as per the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) — IEEFA examines issues related to energy markets, trends, and policies even as its mission is to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable and profitable energy economy — which added Bangladesh can do so with a reduced cost between Taka 5.25 and Taka 7.6 per unit as against the existing cost Taka 8.84 per unit, produced from conventional fossil fuels.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, the Energy Finance Analyst of IEEFA Shafiqul Alam, who is also the author of a reports taken out by the IEEFA to this end, maintained IEEFA’s analysis has shown Bangladesh’s the existing power system can immediately incorporate 1,700MW to 3,400MW of solar during the day and even as subject to the feasibility of location and availability of sufficient wind speed further 2,500MW to 4,000MW of wind power at night can also be produced so as to reduce the use of costly furnace oil-based power generation.
