Gucci is making headlines yet again and this time it is not a collaboration or dragons on the runway but actually the brand’s commitment to sustainability.
The Italian luxury house is launching a new project that will take a step forward in making the label both sustainable and transparent.
Dubbed the ‘Gucci Equilibrium’, the brand has launched an all new web destination at equilibrium.gucci.com that is designed to ‘connect people, planet and purpose’ in the same space.
The launch was smartly slated to be revealed a day before World Environment Day for the initiative to catch all the eyeballs. President and CEO of Gucci, Marco Bizzarri further elaborates, “Gucci Equilibrium will bring clarity and show the architecture of our projects.
The executive lauded Gucci owner Kering for always being the most supportive in bringing both his and creative director Alessandro Michele’s efforts to life. Adding, “The only way to do that is by bringing people together, sharing ideas, innovation and experiences. This is the objective we have set for Gucci Equilibrium.”
One of the new initiatives announced includes a program wherein every Gucci employee will be allowed to devote 1 percent of their total working hours to volunteer for helping propagate positive change in their own community.
As for the new Equilibrium platform, it is actually part of a much larger 10 year plan of the brand renewing its work on creating a more ethical and sustainable fashion powerhouse.
The Equilibrium site already features a project called ‘I was a Sari’ started by Stefano Funari which works with disadvantaged women in Mumbai to upcycle the country’s most popular garment, the sari.
Apart from small initiatives like these, the brand’s main focus will now be on using technology like 3D to ‘reduce lead time and the impact on the environment’ but Bizzari also cautioned that the brand is not really there yet.
