Global fashion advocacy group Fashion Revolution has launched its annual Fashion Revolution Week, urging major fashion brands to significantly increase transparency within their supply chains and reaffirm their commitment to environmental and social responsibility. The campaign, running from 22nd to 27th April under the theme ‘Think Globally, Act Locally,’ aims to mobilise individuals across over 80 countries to engage with local communities and policymakers for a fashion industry that is more sustainable and ethical.
Fashion Revolution emphasises the need for heightened awareness, skill development, and stronger social and environmental policies, stressing that fashion companies must be held accountable for their impact through increased supply chain transparency.
The organisation has raised concerns about a perceived slowdown in commitments from major fashion players regarding environmental stewardship and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This apparent shift comes at a time when global regulatory efforts to protect the environment and labour standards in the garment sector are reportedly facing setbacks. This context underscores the growing importance of grassroots movements in pushing these critical issues back onto the public and corporate agenda.
To drive tangible change, Fashion Revolution is specifically calling on brands to proactively adopt Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Ultimate Producer Responsibility (UPR) practices worldwide, even in regions where these are not legally mandated. They believe that early adoption by influential brands will create the necessary momentum for broader acceptance and eventual legal frameworks.
Furthermore, the campaign urges brands to leverage their influence to advocate for robust and effective legislation that safeguards both people and the planet. This includes demonstrating their commitment through transparent actions, clear disclosures, concrete commitments, and the establishment of specific timelines for achieving sustainability goals.
A key demand from Fashion Revolution is for brands to openly share comprehensive details about their supply chains. This includes providing information on production volumes, the implementation of living wages for workers, and concrete steps being taken towards decarbonization.
In a significant financial call to action, Fashion Revolution is encouraging fashion brands to allocate 2 per cent of their revenue towards the decarbonisation of their supply chains. This investment, they argue, is crucial for ensuring a fair transition for workers and affected communities as the industry moves towards more sustainable practices.
Local Fashion Revolution teams have already initiated Retail Funding Campaigns, inviting retailers to provide financial support to their local organizations and utilize their platforms to amplify awareness about these critical issues.
One prominent discussion will center around ‘Beyond Plastic Fashion,’ challenging brands to critically examine the presence of plastics throughout their supply chains and make public commitments to reduce and ultimately eliminate their plastic usage.
