After Bangladesh’s Cabinet reportedly approved in principle the draft of Bangladesh Labour Act (Amendment) Bill, 2018 with several key changes, which is said to be favouring the 3.6 million work force greatly, a rights organisation named Sramik Nirapotta Forum (SNF) has alleged that the Government has approved on principle the draft amendment to the labour law without taking the workers’ rights into consideration properly.
“Workers’ rights and interest have been ignored in the draft amendment to the labour law,” SNF reportedly maintained, while urging the Government to place the draft before the cabinet again after consultations with all workers’ representatives.
The organisation raised concerns over some issues that included fixation of compensation in case of workplace accidents and injury, workers’ rights to form trade unions, maternity benefits, insurance, workplace violence and harassment against women and case settlement.
As per media reports, the approval in principle to the draft of Bangladesh Labour Act (Amendment) Bill, 2018, was recently given by the Cabinet at the weekly meeting of the Cabinet held at the secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Informing the pressmen on the same, State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque reportedly held a press meet where he said the draft law would be placed before the Cabinet for a complete approval and tabled into the Parliament for passing.
