
Discussions have started in Cambodia about what the minimum wage should be for its garment, footwear, and travel goods sectors in 2025, according to local news reports.
The wage discussions for garment workers are expected to encompass approximately one million workers and will be carried out through a tripartite mechanism comprising the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, factory representatives, and labour organisations.
Local news sources reported that during the meeting, key social and economic indicators were presented as a foundation for the negotiations. All parties agreed to use these statistics for internal discussions before presenting their positions at subsequent meetings.
According to reports, union spokesperson Kim Chansamnang said the union’s proposed amount will be based on a careful analysis to guarantee a mutually agreeable conclusion.
Employers’ representative Nang Sothy is reported to have mentioned that a number of social and economic issues are taken into account during salary talks, including the 2.5 per cent inflation rate that is now in place.
Heng Sour, the Minister of Labour in charge of the Government’s delegation to the National Council on Minimum Wage, is said to have been optimistic that all sides would carefully review the information they had submitted before the next meeting. He said that figures that have been proposed by each party may be disclosed during the meeting on 29th August.
