Approximately 1,000 workers from Dird Composite Textiles Ltd., held a sit-in recently outside the Department for Inspection of Factories and Establishments (Dife) and the Department of Labour (DoL), demanding nearly Taka 70 crore in unpaid arrears.
Reports maintained this adding the factory, known for exporting garments, particularly jackets and T-shirts, employed 5,129 workers.
The workers, laid off on 23rd September due to company losses and decreased work orders, initially confined senior officials of DIFE and DoL.
Despite a 28th November settlement agreement for Taka 30 crore, workers seek the full amount, with 10 representatives meeting State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian for resolution.
After discussions with union leaders, the president of the Bangladesh Apparel Workers Federation, Md Towhidur Rahman, disclosed that the initially claimed arrears of nearly Taka 70 crore were negotiated down to Taka 52 crore.
Regrettably, another faction of union leaders engaged in separate negotiations, ultimately settling the matter for Taka 30 crore, Rahman added.
