Coach is pushing the boundaries of sustainability with its Coachtopia product effort. The brand just unveiled a new collection and advertising campaign showcasing advancements in eco-friendly bag manufacturing.
Actor and Coachtopia community member Lola Tung stars in a “high-flying short film to celebrate a new range of bags crafted from the leftover leather scraps of iconic Coach styles” as part of the campaign for the new Alter/Ego collection, which is called The Wasted Parts.
The particular leather scraps that are left over after bags like the Tabby, Hampton, and Brooklyn designs are made are ones that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill.
The collection “marks a bold step forward for Coachtopia in its mission to pioneer a circular economy in fashion, reflecting its ethos of not only making with waste materials, but designing out waste in the first place,” according to the firm, which also described the campaign as “an emotional one.”
Coachtopia was originally all about manufacturing bags utilising waste leather, but its next step now is to meticulously plan Coachtopia bags as part of the production process for the mainline Coach bags.
Coachtopia’s unique Chequerboard Upcrafted Leather method is used in five new bag types from the new Alter/Ego collection to repurpose the little and uneven leather scraps left over after particular Coach bag patterns are cut from Coach leather hides.
Coach’s Quilted Tabby Shoulder Bag leather scraps are used to make the Alter/Ego Chequerboard Shoulder Bag and Hobo Bag, Coach Brooklyn Bag leather scraps are used to make the Chequerboard Satchel Bag and Mini Satchel Bag, and Coach Originals Hamptons Bag leather scraps are used to make the Chequerboard Wavy Baguette.
The Alter/Ego reveal, according to Coactopia, is “another step forward [in its] mission to pioneer circularity in fashion by reimagining waste, design, and the end of life of our products.” Coactopia was founded 18 months ago.
Joon Silverstein, the company’s SVP of worldwide marketing and sustainability and head of the eco brand, has been the main driver behind Coachtopia.
