The current increase of lawsuits against owners of the garment industry has raised severe worries for the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), which claims that these actions are hurting business operations and eroding worldwide trust in Bangladesh’s RMG sector.
Former BGMEA president Faruque Hassan noted during a news conference in Dhaka on Thursday that since the 5th August government transition, several lawsuits have been brought against even well-respected businessmen. Hassan underlined that these legal proceedings have upset international buyers and created a bad environment for industry players.
Leaders of the Sammilita Parishad, a significant trade and political organisation in the sector, also presented their positions at the meeting in advance of the next BGMEA elections.
The post-5 August period was chaotic, according to Quazi Moniruzzaman, a former president of the BGMEA and current president of the Sammilita Parishad, with numerous industry figures identified as defendants in various trials. He promised that these problems would be settled legally and that there are now no operational obstacles facing the impacted companies.
In addition, he denounced previous factionalism in the sector and promised that if the Sammilita Parishad wins the elections, it will take action to stop these kinds of activities and stop money laundering overseas.
BGMEA’s digital transformation, the creation of one-stop services for members, training and funding for new business owners, a sustainable development plan for SME factories, a greater use of renewable energy like solar power, and initiatives to bolster the “Made in Bangladesh” brand are all on the panel’s major agenda, which was also revealed at the press conference.
The panel’s vision was supported by prominent industry experts who attended the event, such as Mustazirul Shovon Islam, Managing Director of Sparrow Group, and Abul Kalam, Managing Director of Chaity Group.
As the industry navigates a challenging political landscape, stakeholders remain hopeful that reforms and strategic initiatives will help restore stability and confidence in Bangladesh’s vital garment sector.
