Keeping in perspective the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festival, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporter Association (BGMEA) has asked its members to exercise caution while making any decisions on labour-related issues in their respective factories so as to avert any workers’ unrest.
This is as per reports, which claimed that BGMEA President Faruque Hassan has issued a circular in this regard recently, in which he had referred to an intelligence report as per which a third party might instigate a labour unrest in the factories during the Eid festival, even as he called upon the member factories to give Eid holidays to workers in phases so as to reduce pressure on highways and waterways during the holy festival, when the garment workers travel back home.
The BGMEA President also reportedly asked the members of the trade body to discuss with the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), the BGMEA and the law enforcement agencies, if necessary, before announcing any decisions which might cause workers’ unrest.
