Benetton Group, The Italian-based fashion brand, has pledged to use 100 per cent sustainable cotton by the year 2025. This could be either recycled or organic cotton or the one certified by Better Cotton Initiative (BCI).
The Group, which has been the member of BCI since 2017, has already started working towards achieving this 2025 plan.
- Benetton aims to use 100 per cent sustainable cotton by 2025
- In 2018, organic cotton constituted 4.7 per cent of the total clothes made by Benetton
- In 2018, 23 per cent of the cotton used for United Colors of Benetton and Sisley collections was certified by BCI
Benetton’s continual commitment to using sustainable cotton could be very well gauged from the fact that last year, organic cotton constituted 4.7 per cent of the total apparels manufactured by the firm.
What is noteworthy is that it was cultivated strictly according to the rules of bio-cultivation with minimal impact on environment.
Besides, 2018 also saw 23 per cent of the cotton used for United Colors of Benetton and Sisley collections being certified by BCI.
Keeping in tandem with BCI’s sustainability programme, Benetton has started buying cotton processed and harvested by those farmers who are well trained to eliminate or minimise the use of fertilisers and pesticides as well as ensure the sustainable use of water and soil.
The company also said in a press release that it is committed to work for not only environmental protection but also focus on social and economic aspects.
