Alleged Government negligence in managing the Tazreen garments fire case has been denounced by garment workers’ platforms, which resulted in prolonged trial processes and an ongoing absence of justice 11 years after the tragedy unfolded.
On this day in 2012, a devastating fire at Tazreen Fashion Limited in Savar’s Ashulia claimed the lives of over 112 garment workers.
Justice for Tazreen and Garments Shramik Oikya Forum, representing workers’ interests, issued a joint statement on the tragedy’s 11th anniversary, asserting that the Government’s negligence has allowed owners to evade accountability and impede workers’ pursuit of justice.
Despite two filed cases and 104 witnesses in the charge sheet, only 11 have testified over the past eight years.
The platforms highlighted the government’s systematic negligence, arguing it shields owners from accountability.
Expressing reluctance in presenting witnesses, the government’s actions raise concerns about its commitment to ensuring justice for the victims. The statement suggests an inherent discouragement in identifying and prosecuting crimes committed by the owner class, fostering a situation where families of deceased workers are losing hope in the pursuit of justice.
