The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing transparency and sustainability in the country’s garment sector by launching a pilot project to implement a blockchain-enabled Digital Product Passport (DPP) system.
On Saturday, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka, marking the formal initiation of the project. The agreement was signed by BGMEA Administrator Anwar Hossain, DigiProd Pass Limited Managing Director Salauddin Sohag, and Digital Architect CEO Dr. Fahim Chowdhury, representing their respective organisations.
The initiative aims to support data collection and integration within the garment supply chain, enabling better traceability and accountability. DigiProd Pass Limited will lead the technical development of the DPP platform, while Digital Architect will provide services including product lifecycle assessment, system development, stakeholder training, and data integration as a local technology partner.
Spanning 24 months, the pilot project will involve selected garment manufacturers, with the goal of assessing the feasibility of designing, scaling, and implementing the digital passport system across Bangladesh’s garment industry. The system is expected to bolster Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the global market by providing international buyers with verified data on product lifecycle, environmental impact, and sustainability performance.
Considering that approximately 60 per cent of Bangladesh’s garment exports are destined for the European Union, the project underscores the importance of complying with evolving EU standards. Ensuring adherence to these standards is now critical for maintaining market access and competitiveness.
The primary objectives of the pilot include evaluating the technical and operational effectiveness of the DPP system, promoting transparency and sustainability in production, and providing necessary training to stakeholders. The project reflects Bangladesh’s commitment to aligning with international regulatory standards and strengthening its position in the global garment trade.
