The apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, the BGMEA has taken an initiative as part of which the trade body’s member factories, which are interested to work with buyers from Europe but have remained out of the jurisdiction of Accord-run safety inspection, will have their units inspected by the RSC or the Readymade Garment Sustainability Council.
Media reports maintained this adding the BGMEA had recently sent out letters to the member factories in this direction asking them to share profiles of their respective units to be audited under the RSC programme.
For information, Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, which was the consortium of EU buyers, conducted fire, electrical and structural safety in the factories and when it wound up its operations in Bangladesh, handed over the responsibilities to RSC — according to the BGMEA, more than 1,200 apparel factories are listed under the RSC which are doing business with European Union-based buyers and brands — following which the RSC took over the charge of the Accord’s work in Bangladesh in June 2020.
