Roughly two weeks after unveiling the new US labour rights policy, the Bangladesh Government convened its inaugural formal meeting with business leaders recently.
During the meeting, business leaders, without directly expressing concern about the policy, reportedly urged the Government to systematically address legal weaknesses related to labour rights, as per media reports.
Simultaneously, the Government emphasised the importance of maintaining competitiveness in exporting products.
Organised by the Ministry of Commerce to assess the implementation progress of the National Action Plan on Labour Rights, the meeting took place at the secretariat, chaired by Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh.
Attendees included Labor Secretary Ehsan-e-Elahi, FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam, BGMEA President Farque Hassan, BKMEA Executive President Mohammad Hatem, and other stakeholders.
Following the meeting, Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh highlighted the United States and the European Union’s interest in enhancing labour conditions in Bangladesh, noting the country’s commitment to meeting this demand through recent reforms and legal amendments.
