Bangladesh, which reportedly has the highest number of eco-friendly clothing and textile mills than any other country globally, has further strengthened its position in green transformation after US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) approval of two new production units for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
According to reports both the factories — on 27 January 27, JL Fashions Ltd., of Gazipur received platinum certificate from the USGBC for the LEED O+M; Existing building v4.1 rating system with a point of 84 while JKL – admin and daycare building in Gazipur also received a platinum accreditation with the LEED BD+C; New Construction v3-2009 rating system and received an 84 score on the same day — have received Platinum while a third unit has Gold certification thereby taking the total number of factories that have been certified green in January this year to three.
A total of 30 units received LEED certification in 2022, highest in a year even if according to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), so far, 186 factories in Bangladesh apparel sector have LEED certification.
