
The Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation, a dedicated organisation advocating for the rights of garment workers in the country, organised a rally and protest march recently even as their primary objective was to demand a minimum wage of Taka 23,000 for the garment workers.
This event took place in front of Rana Plaza, located in Savar, Dhaka.
The rally saw the participation of leaders from various labour organisations, all standing in solidarity with the cause.
The core demands put forth by the federation encompass the establishment of a minimum wage of Taka 23,000, with 65 per cent of this amount designated as the basic salary.
Furthermore, they requested an annual 10 per cent increment in wages for the garment workers.
Rafiqul Islam Sujan, the President of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation, expressed, “Given the prevailing market conditions and the relentless increase in the prices of essential goods, garment workers are grappling with exceptionally tough circumstances. We urgently appeal for the swift implementation of the Taka 23,000 minimum wage for workers in this industry.”
