The 2022 Impact Report from the nonprofit Apparel Impact Institute (AII) demonstrates quantifiable outcomes from its initiatives.
The cost-effectiveness of its programmes is one important finding in the report. According to the agency, it measured the impact of its programmes in relation to the money it spent in 2022. In the end, CO2e emissions were decreased by US $ 17 per tonne, as opposed to an average cost of US $ 67 per tonne for alternative decarbonization options. This, according to AII, is a result of the power and efficiency of its Clean By Design activities.
As a result, when creating its portfolio of climate solutions, AII will evaluate the efficiency of decarbonisation solutions and programmes using cost-effectiveness as a major benchmark.
To support the industry’s goal of halving carbon emissions by 2030, AII established the US $ 250 million Fashion Climate Fund in 2022 with principal contributors Lululemon, the H&M Group, the PVH Foundation, Target, H&M Foundation, and the Schmidt Family Foundation. According to the report, AII hopes to raise US $ 2 billion by 2023 in order to expedite decarbonization and implement solutions with a track record of success in all intervention tiers.
The scope of AII’s programming is also expanding, with 600 facilities operating in 28 different regions of the world in 2022. The paper also emphasises the expansion of AII’s carbon reduction efforts, which now include five interventions: increasing material efficiency, scaling sustainable materials and practises, removing coal from manufacturing, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.
The analysis demonstrates that AII activities have already had a substantial impact, saving 56,346 tonnes of GHG emissions in 2022, which is comparable to removing 12,127 automobiles from the road and conserving water for 714 Olympic-sized swimming pools and 3,504 washing machines.
Additionally, the study highlights anticipated programme expansion areas for 2023 as well as planned ecosystem leadership, such as the creation of the Climate Solutions Portfolio and enhanced fundraising and grant-making through the Fashion Climate Fund.
The AII believes that by showcasing quantifiable outcomes from its activities, the 2022 Impact Report illustrates its continued commitment to advancing climate action in the fashion sector.
