Auction destination Sotheby’s New York, in collaboration with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), has unveiled an auction collection titled CFDA: Defining American Style. The collection includes 37 pieces showcasing significant moments in American fashion, featuring designers from Stephen Burrows to Rick Owens.
This collection will be on display at Sotheby’s New York Gallery from 12th-20th January, CFDA: Defining American Style invites the public to view a spectrum of iconic looks. The collection covers the essence of American fashion with contributions from well-known designers and artists.
The collaboration acts as a fashion time capsule, which includes 1970s designs by Stephen Burrows and Halston to a rare Calvin Klein piece from 1988, an early 2000s Ralph Rucci jacket, and contemporary styles by Khaite and Rick Owens from 2023.
Inclusion of garments worn by influential figures like Anna Wintour, Margot Robbie, Taylor Swift, Kate Moss, Lady Gaga, Erykah Badu, and Winnie Harlow is worthy of note.
CFDA Chairman Thom Browne states “When you think of American craftsmanship and fashion, you must first think of the incredible stories that people are telling here…and the diversity in storytelling that nowhere else in the world offers… that’s what you’ll see in the pieces each designer has chosen… the breadth of the creativity that happens here in America.”
