Reliance Industries has appointed former Flipkart executive Jeyandran Venugopal as president and chief executive officer of Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd (RRVL), the holding company for the conglomerate’s retail operations. The position is newly created as part of the group’s broader strategic push into tech-led and omni-channel retail.
In an internal communication announcing the appointment, Isha Ambani, who leads Reliance’s retail and consumer businesses, said Venugopal would work closely with her and the wider leadership team under the guidance of Mukesh Ambani and Manoj Modi. She noted that his remit includes strengthening the retail portfolio, accelerating omni-channel growth, and enhancing technical and operational capabilities across the value chain.
She said Venugopal’s “deep understanding of consumer behaviour, commercial acumen, and technology-led retail transformation” would be central to shaping the next stage of RRVL’s growth.
Veteran group executive V. Subramaniam continues as managing director of RRVL. The company oversees Reliance Retail Ltd and, until recently, the group’s FMCG arm, Reliance Consumer Products Ltd (RCPL). RCPL was spun off on 1st December as a direct subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd.
Venugopal previously served as chief product and technology officer at Flipkart, where he led large teams across product engineering, design, data science, IT, security and infrastructure. According to the internal note, he played a significant role in driving growth, customer engagement, ecosystem expansion and strengthening the platform’s position in Indian e-commerce.
Before joining Flipkart, he held the same leadership role at fashion e-commerce platforms Myntra and Jabong, and previously worked at Yahoo and Amazon Web Services. He holds dual master’s degrees in computer science and mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois, along with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy.
The appointment comes at a time when Reliance is intensifying its focus on e-commerce—both B2C and B2B—while expanding its presence in the wider omni-commerce ecosystem. Despite its scale in offline retail, Reliance Retail is still working to deepen its footprint in Indian e-commerce, where it faces strong competition from Amazon, Flipkart and rapid-delivery players such as Swiggy Instamart and Blinkit.
