Some fashion retailers are now resuming sourcing in Myanmar!
Following a military coup on 1 February 2021, an emergency was declared in Myanmar that led to violent protests eventually forcing many clothing retailers leave the country.
However, now there are reports of fashion retailers like Primark, Bestseller and H&M planning to resume sourcing in the country.
Bestseller, the Danish fashion retailer, has commissioned an independent report and evaluation of its due diligence to ensure responsible production in Myanmar.
Based on findings, Bestseller does not believe that there are reasonable grounds to assume that its 3 factories are situated on plots of land that are owned, directly or indirectly, by the military.
H&M too has gradually started placing new orders again. The Swedish retailer has said that it is focused on avoiding the imminent risk of its suppliers having to close their factories in Myanmar.
The fast fashion retailer said that while it recognised any advice on this complex matter involves a delicate balancing of various considerations, the general view is that the preferred course for international companies is to stay and continue to do business if they can ensure that there are no links to Myanmar’s ruling military.
Primark, the Irish fashion retailer, also will be now sourcing in the country. The retailer said that irrespective of the duration of production and delivery periods, Primark is committed to fulfilling all existing orders with its suppliers in Myanmar.
Meanwhile, organisations like the Clean Clothes Campaign are urging all suppliers, brands and retailers, active in Myanmar, to publicly condemn the military coup, call for the restoration of democracy and the rule of law.
It needs to be seen how many more fashion brands now begin sourcing in the country.
