Retailers received US $ 1.89 billion worth of unwanted goods from British consumers who returned to work last week following the holiday, according to home delivery company Parcelhero.
According to recent data from Parcelhero, post-Christmas returns on January 2 increased by 6.8 per cent over the same day the previous year, while Royal Mail stated that returns on the same day were up over 52 per cent on an average day from the previous month.
In contrast to the slight but noticeable decline in the volume and value of returns last year, Parcelhero’s head of consumer research, David Jinks, said in a statement that the company has examined its own return volumes and spoken with individuals in the courier and retail sectors, and it appears that yesterday saw a notable peak in returns. An estimated US $ 1.89 billion of toys, apparel, and electronics are currently returning to stores.
Estimates of how well retailers did this Christmas are inconclusive. Although it appears that the last-minute surge in high street traffic did not occur, strong online sales numbers are predicted for Black Friday and beyond. People were definitely spending money before Christmas if the quantity of returns in the package system at the time corresponds to the amount purchased. Nevertheless, it’s possible that this year’s present selection was a complete failure on the part of all of us.
