Leading Indian e-commerce sites Myntra and Reliance-owned Ajio, have reportedly stopped selling Turkish clothing labels on their websites in response to calls for boycotts sparked by Turkey’s backing of Pakistan during the most recent war between India and Pakistan.
This comes after Turkey and Azerbaijan backed Pakistan during India’s Operation Sindoor, which was initiated in reaction to the Pahalgam incident last month and aimed to destroy terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Sales of all Turkish brands, including the well-known international women’s western clothing brand Trendyol, have been temporarily halted by Flipkart-owned Myntra, which has the sole permission to sell the Alibaba-owned Turkish brand in India. Two industry executives said that the move started last weekend as tensions increased and that a full halt was put into place by Thursday. According to a Myntra executive, it is unclear whether or not these companies would make a comeback.
In a similar vein, Reliance has removed all of its Turkish clothing brands from Ajio, including Koton, LC Waikiki, and Mavi, and all of the products are now marked as out of stock. The company’s dedication to national sentiment was underscored by a Reliance representative, who said, “In solidarity with our fellow citizens, we are actively reassessing our offerings across platforms to ensure they reflect the values and sentiments of the country.” In the coming days, the spokesperson also announced that Reliance’s office in Turkey would close and that all Turkish products would be removed off Ajio’s list.
