A mobile app has been launched by Minister of State for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises Giriraj Singh after the 9th National Board of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) meeting held in New Delhi, recently.
Out of total 8,000 Khadi stores operational in India, 4,000 Khadi stores can be located through the app. Rest of the stores will also be made ‘searchable’ on the store locator app by the end of this month, informed Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chairman, KVIC.
The khadi body targets to reach the sales target of Rs. 5,000 crores by 2017-18. Setting up of export cells is also underway to promote sales of khadi in overseas in order to make Khadi an international brand.
Around 7 lakh privately owned household units funded through schemes like the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) are engaged in manufacturing of Khadi and Village Industries products.
KVIC, a body formed by Indian Government, is responsible for the planning, promotion, organization and implementation of programmes for the development of khadi and other village industries in the rural areas in coordination with other agencies engaged in rural development wherever necessary.
The Government has been taking various steps in order to modernise khadi. Modern retailing concepts to tap into the retail potential of India and to boost the sale of khadi and popularise it, especially among the fashion-savvy youth, is also being undertaken by the KVIC. And, the launch of the mobile app is one such step.
