London emerged as one of the top three global cities for Black Friday sales, according to Shopify’s latest data. Alongside Manchester and Birmingham, the city showcased its retail power as UK consumers embraced both online and in-store shopping.
Shopify recorded a record-breaking US $ 11.5 billion in global sales, with merchants peaking at US $ 4.6 million in sales per minute. UK consumers alone accounted for a 36 per cent sales increase over 2023. Top product categories included T-shirts, activewear, hoodies, vitamins, and skincare.
The New West End Company (NWEC) also reported an 11 per cent increase in footfall across London’s West End during Black Friday and a 35 per cent rise on Cyber Monday compared to last year. NWEC CEO Dee Corsi emphasised the importance of flagship retail hubs in attracting both domestic and international shoppers, despite the absence of tax-free shopping incentives for foreign visitors.
With 18 per cent of orders crossing borders, UK businesses like Astrid & Miyu and Gymshark highlighted their global influence during the shopping frenzy.
