India’s retail sales in May 2025 increased by 7% over the same month the previous year, according to the Retailers Association of India’s (RAI) 62nd Retail Business Survey. Important trends influencing different retail segments in the nation’s diverse regions are highlighted in the report. With May sales being up 7% YoY, according to the numbers, indicate that the retail sector is gaining momentum.
In terms of categories, the apparel and clothing segment saw a decent growth of 7% from 1st May 2025 to 31st May 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, while the footwear segment saw a growth of 5% in the same period.
“After several months of moderate growth of around 4 to 5%, retail businesses are beginning to show signs of accelerated growth, with sales in May 2025 growing 7% compared to the same period last year. This uptick suggests improving consumer sentiment, particularly in discretionary categories. The outlook for the upcoming festive season appears optimistic,” said Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of Retailers Association of India (RAI).
