Gap Inc., reported third-quarter profit that exceeded forecasts and a smaller-than-expected drop in comparable sales, showing that Chief Executive Officer Richard Dickson is having early success in improving the company’s performance.
Even though same-store sales declined for the fourth straight quarter, they did so less sharply than anticipated since Gap’s largest brand, Old Navy, outperformed Athleta and Banana Republic.
In an interview, Dickson stated, “I feel good about our performance overall, but there’s still work to be done on the brands.” He presented recommendations such as improved product mix and marketing at Banana Republic and targeted marketing at Old Navy for women.
The outcomes represent a significant step towards the apparel retailer’s business stabilisation after years of turmoil characterised by abrupt management changes and inventory errors. Dickson needs to turn the firm around quickly since, despite a brief spike during the epidemic, sales have decreased in six of the last eight quarters and shares have lost over half of their value in the last two years.
For the first time since 2021, comparable sales at Old Navy increased, while they marginally decreased at the Gap brand. According to Dickson, Old Navy benefited from a women’s clothing campaign and a website makeover that increased market share.
Banana Republic, meanwhile, posted an 8 per cent same-store sales decline, while at Athleta they fell 19 per cent.
A lower air freight cost, more advantageous contracts for commodities, less promotions, and new product sourcing tactics all contributed to the gross margin of 41.3 per cent, which was above analysts’ average expectation and an improvement over the previous year.
Gap’s earnings are comparable to those of stores like Target Corp. and Macy’s Inc., which both revealed increases in profitability in spite of quarterly drops in same-store sales. Next week, Abercrombie & Fitch Co. and American Eagle Outfitters Inc., two more specialised apparel shops, will release their third-quarter financial results.
