Walmart-owned e-commerce giant Flipkart is moving away from the use of plastic in its packaging.
In an endeavour to reduce plastic packaging by 50 per cent, the company is introducing recycled and sustainable materials as part of achieving a target of zero wastage.
Having reduced the use of plastic packaging across India, the company is phasing out non-sustainable materials completely from its Maharashtra supply chain.
Swapping out poly pouches with recycled paper bags, bubble wraps and airbags with shredded carton waste and two ply roll and using eco-friendly paper shreds from 1 May onwards, Flipkart is aiming at zero waste in the state.
Along with working towards a greener tomorrow themselves, Flipkart is working with policy makers and State Governments to formulate plans to help its seller base of over 200,000 move away from plastic packaging.
“Flipkart is strongly committed to environmental sustainability and is working actively with various partners on long-term sustainability initiatives, helping drive ecosystem awareness,” said Flipkart Group’s chief corporate affairs officer Rajneesh Kumar.
It is imperative to note that this is not the only initiative by the company to become more sustainable. They have also introduced electric vehicles into the last-mile delivery network.
In other news, Flipkart has partnered with Vishal Mega Mart to aide home delivery from over 365 stores in 26 cities of products from the value chain giant. Consumers can order essentials and have delivery partners from Flipkart ensure safe delivery of products in cities including Delhi-NCR, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Patna, Guwahati, Amritsar, among others.
