A spike in activity has been observed at Dhaka’s markets as Eid-ul-Fitr draws near. Shoppers swarmed to well-known shopping locations on Friday, including Mouchak Market, Bashundhara City Shopping Mall, Gausia Market, and New Market.
This year’s Eid coincides closely with Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year. This has led many shoppers to purchase items for both occasions.
Industry insiders estimate that during these two holidays, roughly 75 per cent of sales for a local fashion market surpassing Taka 30,000 crore take place. Some store owners did, however, report lower sales than they did the previous year.
A saree store representative noted, “Our sales are 50 per cent lower than the same period last year. Today, there are more buyers due to the holiday, but weekdays are slower than usual pre-Eid periods.”
New Market shopkeepers were likewise quite busy serving customers. Significant interest was also shown in Deshi Dosh, a cooperation of ten well-known fashion companies exhibiting the creations of local artisans, at their site in the Bashundhara City Shopping Mall. Pre-Eid shopping excitement was further embodied by the busy crowds at the Aarong showrooms in Moghbazar, with lines forming at every payment station.
